What are solar eclipses?
Solar eclipses are a special type of New Moon, where the Sun, Moon, and Earth aligned. The Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on Earth and covering Sun’s light in some areas, partially or totally.
It is possible because, even though the Sun is 400 times wider than the moon, it is also 400 times farther away.
There are four types of solar eclipses:
Total solar eclipse: occurs when the Moon completely covers the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth and creating a brief period of darkness during the day. The Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, becomes visible, and it's a stunning celestial sight
Partial solar eclipse: in this case, the Moon only covers part of the Sun, creating a shadow over a section of the Earth. You won’t see the dramatic "ring of fire," but it’s still an awe-inspiring event
Annular solar eclipse: an annular eclipse happens when the Moon is at a point in its orbit where it’s a little farther from Earth, so it doesn’t completely cover the Sun. This results in a “ring of fire” effect, where the Sun’s outer edges remain visible around the Moon. It’s still spectacular but not as dramatic as a total eclipse. This type of eclipse will happen on October 2nd
Hybrid solar eclipse: because Earth's surface is curved, sometimes an eclipse can shift between annular and total as the Moon’s shadow moves across the globe
Did you know that solar eclipses happen about 2-5 times a year?
However, they are not visible everywhere in the world and each location will only experience a total solar eclipse once every 360 years, on average!
